Ecological Awareness Campaign

Where? Communities of the Rio Division Valley (Northern area of the Path of the Tapir Biological Corridor)

Objective: To raise ecological awareness and provide realistic solutions to common ecological problems.

To whose benefit? Ecosystems of the region, participant communities.

Description: Once a year, CRCT will host, in collaboration with local groups, an ecological campaign that includes educational workshops on common ecological problems and their solutions (i.e. garbage, indiscriminate hunting and logging, toxic chemicals, etc.). The campaign is held at the local school and local community meeting areas, as well as at local demonstration sites. The activities always include an Environmental Forum (round-table discussion) with a host of special guests invited from public and private institutions involved in the subject. This is an important space where community members can voice their frustrations, confusions, and questions regarding conservation, sustainable development and related topics.

Current Status: On May 23 and 24 an Ecological Campaign was hosted in the community of El Brujo. The two-day agenda included two workshops for the primary school children: Endangered Species Awareness (workshop given through a power point presentation by ASANA), and Waste Management Solutions (a hands-on workshop taught to CRCT by the Municipality of Perez Zeledon). The adult - community activities included a Circle of Life activity (activity done at CRCT's project site - included a circle talk, the release into the wild of two captive pacas, and an educational walk through an old-growth forest grove). Community activities also included an Environmental Forum with special guests. This year, the special guest included the president of Fundación LEAD, the president of CRCT, and the Executive Director of ASANA, who is also a forestry engineer. ASANA gave an educational presentation on biological corridors and El Brujo's role within the Path of the Tapir Biological Corridor. Important information was provided regarding ASANA's aid to land owners so that they can put their lands under an environmental payments program, thus increasing their income through conservation. The El Brujo Ecological Campaign ended with a formal unveiling of the new community recycling center, and a practical workshop on the reduction and recycling of household wastes, as well as a talk on Non-toxic ways to clean house. Donated books on the issue of recycling and non-toxic household cleaning solutions were handed out to all attendants.

Contributing partners/funding: Partial funding for the first campaign came from U.S. individual donors. A local community group, Comite de Subcuenca Division Abajo, helped with local coordination of the events, and ASANA, ARAUCARIA, Municipalidad de Perez Zeledon, and Fundacion de Conservacion Yiski provided workshops, and/or educational material. The local Comité de Damas (women's group) provided food and beverages during the events held at the school and community gathering space, and a local B&B (Finca 3 Semillas) provided beverages during The Circle of Life activity. The El Brujo COVIRENAS and the Comité de Subcuenca División Abajo have both expressed interest in coordinating and hosting an annual Ecological Campaign in each of their communities.
