ADVISORY BOARD PROFILE
Jim HenrichCurator Conservatory of Flowers Jim's Bio: Jim joined the SF Recreation & Park Department as Curator, for the Conservatory of Flowers and Strybing Arboretum and Botanical Gardens in June of 2001. His responsibilities include day to day oversight of operations, curation of the living collections (at the Conservatory and Arboretum) and interfacing with the architects, engineers and contractors on all aspects of the Conservatory of Flowers rehabilitation. Jim received a BA in biology and chemistry in 1976 from the University of Minnesota, Morris; an MS in horticulture studying Intergeneric Incompatibility in the Iridaceae in 1979 from the University of Minnesota, St. Paul. He continued his postgraduate coursework in biology with emphasis in plant systematics at Saint Louis University and conducted research on the Phylogeny of the New World Iridaceae (excluding the genus Iris) at Missouri Botanical Garden. While at Missouri Botanical Garden from 1979 to 1992, Jim worked in the research department as Coordinator of the Flora de Nicaragua and also held several positions in the horticulture department including: manager of the living research collection; production greenhouses; plant propagator; Horticultural Coordinator and Acting Director of Horticulture. From 1992 to 1999, Jim was the director of horticulture at Denver Botanic Gardens where he was responsible for all aspects of managing the horticultural operation. Jim worked with many teams within the botanical gardens as well as with disparate groups of people from the community. Two significant programs created while at DBG were Plant Select® (a plant promotion and introduction program) and Planttalk ColoradoTM (a free, horticultural information service accessible by telephone and the web). During his tenure in St. Louis and Denver, Jim was involved with numerous glasshouse and landscape construction projects. He was intimately involved in all phases of the planning, design and construction document development, oversight of construction, program development, interpretation and dedication planning. Major glasshouse projects include the Climatron renovation, Shoenberg Temperate House and production greenhouse construction in St. Louis and renovation of the Boettcher Memorial Conservatory in Denver. In 1999, Jim became the sole proprietor of Garden Botanicals, a floral shop emphasizing unusual cut flowers and engaged in horticultural consulting and international brokering of plants and cut flowers. Jim's plant interests are wide ranging with emphasis on geophytes and orchids, as well as, the uncommon, unusual and bizarre. His publications range from in vitro orchid seed germination and plant systematics (primarily on New World genera of the iris family) to biochemical analysis of plant extracts.
